Dr. Virginia Kaklamani - Northwestern Medicine
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________
We cannot begin to express how delighted we are to have Dr. Kaklamani officially join our ballroom family.  In 2013 we decided to direct the proceeds of our event to a breast cancer vaccine trial imagined by some doctors at Northwestern Medicine.  In the process of getting to know some of the doctors at Northwestern, we met Dr. Kaklamani  - and everywhere we turned we found her grateful patients and admiring colleagues.

Dr. Kaklamani is a medical oncologist specializing in breast cancer and cancer genetics.  She works on finding novel therapies for her patients and evaluates the link between obesity and breast cancer.
She points out that  breast cancer is a disease that affects more than 200,000 individuals every year in the United States and despite progress, 40,000 people die of breast cancer every year.

"Studies have shown that the benefit of losing weight to maintain a healthy weight is as great as the benefit from any chemotherapy we can offer our patients.  However this benefit is not the same in every breast cancer patient.  Identifying the individuals who will benefit the most from a weight intervention program will help improve our cure rates."

When she's not working, she loves playing tennis and visiting her family in Greece.  She also has some inside coaching for the ballroom since she loves seeing her two-year-old dance.  Her professional partner from Arthur Murray, Charles, is currently consulting with her 2-year-old on an at-home practice schedule, to supplement her work in the studio and help prepare for the big event on March 7th.

Dr. Kaklamani is the co-leader of Lurie Cancer Center's Cancer Genetics at the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center at Northwestern University.
